BRAKE CONVERSION OF 1968 MK2 JAGUAR FROM SOLID ROTORS TO VENTED ROTORS

BRAKE CONVERSION OF 1968 MK2 JAGUAR FROM SOLID ROTORS TO VENTED ROTORS AND FOUR
POT CALIPERS.
ITEMS NEEDED
1. GOOD IDEA OF WHATS REQUIRED AS ITS NOT A 5 MINUTE JOB
2. ONE GOOD SET JAGUAR SERIES 3, FOUR POT CALIPERS
3. ONE NEW SET ROTORS, SIZE 308mm by 25mm, by 51.5mm with 5 stud hole pattern, with centre hub hole of 82mm. Refer fig 1.
4. One new set brake pads
5. 10 new longer hardened bolts and lock nuts. (rotor retaining bolts)
6. Lastly 4 bushs , (Refer picture 1).
These are used in calipers as series 3 caliper attachment holes are larger, and mk2 brake attachment bolts and holes are smaller, the bushes stop calipers moving around under braking load.
NOTE.
l my case the rotor l used measured 308mm by 25mm by 43mm with 5 stud hole pattern and centre hole of 70mm. Refer fig 1. Refer to your local brake specialist they should be able to order you a rotor, by 25mm by 51.5mm with 5 stud hole pattern same as mk2 and centre hole of 82mm same as mk2. If not keep reading
MACHINING.
To start with the centre hole was machined to the same size as the oringal solid rotors 82mm
Next the oringal solid rotors where machined and the 5 hole pattern plate was cut off and then machined to a thickness of 8.5mm.
This plate was then used to pack between the stub and the rotor, ( the “B” measurement should now read 51.5mm).
Next step is to replace oringal rotor retaining bolts with long hardened bolts

WARNING this is a brake change from manufactures standard, and should only be attempted by persons that accept all risks involved in such a modification ok now you’re ready

Ok let’s start; remove both front wheels, after jacking up front and chocking rear wheels
Undo flexible brake hose at calipers, clamp hose to stop braking system from leaking
Remove old 3 pot caliper
Remove hub, undo the five retaining bolts that hold rotor to hub store old rotor
As you will need them.
Attach new rotor to old hub.
Replace existing old bearing grease with new grease seeing as you have it apart
Refit hub and tighten bearing to manufactures requirements.
Now attach series 3 caliper to stub axle carrier with new pads fitted using manufactured bushs as mk2 and series 3 caliper hole centres are the same, but bolt size different.
Now refit wheel, you may need to clean up caliper casting on the extreme ends as l did.
Once wheel refitted you may notice distance between inside wheel rim and outer edge caliper, in my case l intend to fit 16 inch rims and not the standard 15 inch rims.

FOOT NOTE.
After much internet research and lots hours speaking to brake specialist, jaguar specialist and dismantling my 1973 series one with brake conversion to series 3, l came to the conclusion that the mk2 stub axle carrier or any part of the front end would not require any changes to the original steering, apart from the manufactured bushs.

A = Diameter
B = Original Height
C = Original Thickness

D = Min. Thickness
E = Centrel Hole Diameter
F = No. of Bolt Holes

If in dough about local rotor sizing refer to a local manufactures web based guide as l did
Once armed with an understanding of rotor sizes and specifications the choice became easy
The same size rotors vary in price according to which vehicle manufacturer it’s fitted to.
In my case there was a difference of $100 per set.

Following your blog I bought a pair of series 3 4pot calipers,reconditioned them,before noticing the the mounting holes have 31/2"centres whereas the mk2 jag's have 3" centres.I can't see how these can be fitted to a mk2!!I now have calipers that of no use to me!!!Thanks alot!!
